Thailand Goes Cashless: How to Pay by QR Code as a Foreigner in 2026

BY SABAI SIGNAL EDITORIAL5 MIN READ

Pull out cash at a Bangkok street stall these days and you might get a slightly puzzled look — chances are the vendor would rather you scan the black-and-white QR sticker taped to their cart. Thailand's PromptPay system, originally built for domestic bank transfers, has become the default way most Thais pay for almost everything, and it's increasingly open to foreign visitors too.

The scale is genuinely large: PromptPay recorded 2.38 billion transactions in May 2026 alone, up 15% year-on-year, according to Nation Thailand's reporting on Bank of Thailand data. More relevant for travelers, inbound cross-border QR payments — foreign visitors paying Thai merchants directly through PromptPay-linked apps — reached 1.51 billion baht in May 2026, a 382% jump from the year before.

That growth is being driven by a wave of new tools built specifically for foreigners. Wise has been rolling out PromptPay QR scanning and transfers in Thailand in phases between March and October 2026, letting users pay Thai QR codes directly from their Wise balance. TAGTHAi's Easy Pay, launching in August 2026, goes a step further by dropping the requirement for a physical prepaid card entirely, letting international visitors scan Thai QR codes straight from an app.

In practice, once you have a supported app linked, paying is simple: open the app, scan the merchant's PromptPay QR code, confirm the amount, and you're done — no Thai bank account required. It works at 7-Elevens, shopping malls, and (increasingly) small food stalls and markets.

One caution: not every app or card supports Thai PromptPay QR yet, and small vendors in more rural areas may still be cash-only. It's still worth carrying some cash as a backup, especially outside major cities — but for day-to-day spending in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or the islands, a working QR payment app now covers most of what you need.
