Demystifying the DTV Visa: Requirements & Real Experiences

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) was introduced in 2024 to cover remote workers, freelancers, and people attending short courses (Muay Thai gyms, cooking schools, and similar) who did not fit neatly into the old visa categories.

What it generally allows: multiple entries over a 5-year validity window, with each stay capped at 180 days and a one-time 180-day extension available from inside Thailand at local immigration — so a single entry can, in practice, cover up to a year before you need to leave and re-enter.

Typical proof-of-funds requirement: applicants are usually asked to show a bank balance in the range of 500,000 THB (or the equivalent in your home currency) at the time of application. This threshold has moved before and can move again, so confirm the current figure before you rely on it.

Remote workers: expect to submit an employment letter or contract showing you work for a company registered outside Thailand, or documentation of freelance/self-employed income from foreign clients. Working for a Thai company on a DTV is not the intended use case.

Soft-power / course applicants (Muay Thai, cooking, language schools): expect to submit enrollment confirmation from a registered Thai institution alongside your funds proof.

Where to apply: through the Thailand e-Visa portal or a Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate in your home country — not on arrival. Processing time and the exact document checklist vary by embassy, so build in buffer time before a planned move date.
